Southernness in writing too often seems to echo "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance": "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” In Dixie County, Florida the facts are much weirder than the kudzu covered legends. I reflect on my experiences in this area to provide the anxieties, oddities, and quirks that are needed to balance the regional narrative. Writer Lee Smith once said "It is damn hard to put a pipe-smoking granny or a pet possum into a novel these days and get away with it." And that is probably for the best.
